Bergen, Norway to Reykjavik, Iceland

Wednesday, September 7

Not much to write today, as it was pretty much a get-from-Point-A-to-Point-B kind of day. There are no photos, either, so feel free to tune out right now – fair warning!  We had an 8:30 flight from Bergen that actually left ten minutes early – guess it’s not a good idea to cut things too close in Norway!  After a 40-minute hop back to Oslo, it was a 2.5 hr flight to Reykjavik, Iceland.

We were thrilled that our luggage actually came with us this time, and in the time it took for the carousel to deliver our bags, Tom made a stop at the Duty Free shop, which is the cheapest place in the country to buy wine and beer.

Armed with the essentials, we drove southeast of the city to Hvolsvollur, where we’ll spend the first four nights of our week in this country.  The volcanic origins of the land were obvious in the rocky terrain that lined the road, the black soil, and some areas of molten outcroppings.  The weather was very changeable – some sun, some heavy rain, mostly just gray skies.  We stopped at a TI in a shopping center that has a plexiglass section of floor displaying an area where two tectonic plates are gradually moving apart!  This split runs right through the country, so we’ve been warned!

Like most places we saw en route, Holsvollur is not much of a town, but it probably passes for a metropolis in Iceland. We expect it will be a good base for some of the areas we want to explore in this island country and we have very nice apartment for our time here.

That’s all for tonight!
